Supporting Your Teen Without Fear, Guilt, or Frustration

Like many things in life, my therapy practice grew out of my own needs. As a mother, I deeply understand the desire to create a safe, loving home while also struggling with the fear, uncertainty, and guilt that come when you feel you are not a perfect parent. And when your child is facing something as scary as an eating disorder, our fears and guilt can become overwhelming.

For over 15 years, I have helped parents navigate the parenting traps, and then BUM—the unwanted guest, an eating disorder—came for the long “visit,” and everything changed. The next five years were spent supporting the unwilling teen to stay alive and walk the road to recovery.

When YOU get the support you need, you can better support your loved one.

I know how hard it is to watch your child struggle while feeling terrified and powerless. Parents often worry about saying the wrong thing, making the situation worse, or damaging their relationship. That is scary—but as long as the fear doesn’t paralyze you, as long as you have hope, you will continue to fight for your teen’s life (health?). There is no other option. Our teens need to see us strong and hopeful so they can lean on us when they can’t yet support themselves.

Supporting a teenager with an eating disorder is not an easy task, nor is it a short one.

The most important thing I learned during those years is that in order to keep hope and stay strong, parents need a place where they can regenerate. A safe place where they can allow themselves to be weak, vulnerable, and sad. A place where they will be understood, get virtual or physical hugs, and share fears and wins. Being surrounded by people who get you makes daily struggles less lonely and helps us stay hopeful.

My Approach

My approach is built on understanding, compassion, and communication that works. I help parents:

  • Let go of guilt and focus on setting boundaries and staying calm even in difficult moments.

  • Use compassion to build trust and connection so their teen will start trusting and become more open to parental guidance.

  • Stay confident and consistent through the marathon of their teenager’s healing.

Being truly seen and heard is an incredibly powerful and healing experience, and that’s what I offer parents—a space to process, reflect, gather their energy, and learn new ways to show up for their teen in a way that effectively supports them on their way to recovery.

If you’re feeling lost, overwhelmed, or unsure of what to do next, I’d love to support you. Together, we can help your teen feel supported and understood while also giving you the tools to navigate this journey with compassion and calm.
